Automotive Fun Fact: First License Plates

Automotive Trivia from our Family of Auto Shops

As a family of automotive repair shops, we are always talking about cars.  Have you ever wondered who had the first license plate and where it was from?  Our team of expert automotive technicians did some research and dug up the answers!

In 1901 New York was the first state to require license plates except instead of issuing the plates themselves, drivers were expected to create their own plates using their initials.  The state charged a $1 fee to keep track of all of the plates.  The first state-issued license plates were issued by Massachusetts in 1903.  Instead of using a combination of letters and numbers like we use today, the state only used numbers and started with the number 1.  The “#1” plate belonged to a man named Frederick Tudor and his family still holds an active registration on the plate!  The plates grew horizontally as the numbers got longer.
